We depart Plymouth at 9am and head towards the Regency spa town of Cheltenham for a lunch break and a stroll around the town. It is home to the award winning gardens, the Holst Birthplace Museum, where the composer of “The Planets” was born and the Pittville Pump Room (some of these attractions may incur an entry fee). From here we continue our journey onto our hotel which is located just on the outskirts of Birmingham.

Saturday

This morning we’ll enjoy a 45 minute cruise on the Dudley Canal. Enjoy a stunning video show in Little Tess Cavern explaining how the limestone was originally formed. Learn how the fossilised remains of small creatures and plants – now clearly visible in Castle Mill’s coral reef – once lay on the sea bed. See the amazing lifelike reconstructions in Hurst Cavern – with mannequins depicting how miners worked in the tunnels during the 18th century. Delight in the incredible music and light show in the Singing Cavern. Discover the traditional art of “legging” in the tunnels. This afternoon we will travel up to Telford, named after Thomas Telford – the renowned civil engineer. It is one of the UK’s fastest growing and most successful new towns.

Sunday

This morning we head into Birmingham for an hour long circular cruise onboard one of three passenger narrowboats which will depart from the International Convention Centre Quayside. You will cruise along quiet stretches of the canal which first brought commercial life to Birmingham and was the start of the first industrial revolution over two hundred years ago. This afternoon you will have a couple of hours free time to explore the city of Birmingham where you could perhaps head to the famous Bull Ring shopping complex, browse the shops in the town centre or stay by the canals and visit the Sea life Centre (entry not included). We will leave here late afternoon aiming to arrive back into Plymouth mid – late evening.
