This morning we visit Penrhyn Castle, a 19th century fantasy castle with spectacular surroundings. This enormous neo-Norman castle sits between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait. It was built for the wealthy Pennant family and is crammed with spellbinding objects. It retains the Victorian kitchens, walled gardens and servants’ rooms, as well as a model railway and superb collection of 19th and 20th century dolls. Home to one of the finest art collections in Wales, the castle holds paintings by Rembrandt and Canaletto. Artefacts include a one-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria and hand-made Chinese and William Morris wallpapers. This afternoon we will enjoy free time at the seaside resort of Colwyn Bay.

Wednesday

Today we visit Plas Brondanw Gardens in Llanfrithen. This garden is constructed on an axis in line with the local mountain known as Cnicht, with a Holm Oak tree many centuries old as its centrepiece. The garden was gifted in 1908 by his father to Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, then a young man of 25, and although Sir Clough went on to be the best known for his creation at Portmeirion, he always regarded Plas Brondanw as his finest work. Outside the formal garden is a woodland garden leading up to Pentwr, a purpose built ruin on the hillside looking towards the sea and a present to Sir Clough from his fellow officers in the Welsh Guards.
