Monday

This morning we visit Sissinghurst Castle & Garden – Historic, poetic, iconic; a refuge dedicated to beauty. Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson fell in love with Sissinghurst Castle and created a world-renowned garden. Don’t miss the vast panoramic views from the top of the Tower, the working farm and the 450-acre wider estate. From here we travel the short distance to Tenterden, nestling in the heart of the Weald of Kent, the town is rich in history, having largely escaped much modern development and has consequently retained its charm. It has an attractive, broad tree-lined High Street, brimming with interesting shops.

Tuesday

Chartwell House – the former home of Sir Winston Churchill is our destination today, filled with treasures from every aspect of Churchill’s life, the house at Chartwell provides an opportunity to explore the home of one of Britain’s greatest leaders. In the afternoon, we then head to the National Trust’s Chiddingstone Village – one of the prettiest villages in Kent, and perhaps in England, Chiddingstone is a beautiful example of a Tudor one-street village. It’s very typical of the Kent style, with half-timbered sides, gables and stone-hung red-tiled roofs. National Trust bought the entire village, including the Castle Inn, houses, post office, in 1939 to ensure its preservation. The building that’s now the post office is mentioned as early as 1453 and many of the other buildings probably took materials from earlier settlements. Over 70% of the buildings in Chiddingstone are more than 200 years old. (Entrance to the castle not included).

Thursday

After breakfast, we begin our journey home. We make a visit to Winchester, an unspoilt cathedral city on the edge of the rolling South Downs National Park, Winchester is England’s ancient capital and former seat of King Alfred the Great. We have time to explore and find lunch before continuing our journey home. We anticipate arriving back into Plymouth early evening.
